The 43rd edition of the UPV/EHU Summer Courses was inaugurated today at the Miramar Palace in Donostia / San Sebastián, with the attendance of more than 140 people, including course organisers, directors and speakers, and representatives of the media.

The event began with speeches by Eva Ferreira, Rector of the UPV/EHU; Eider Mendoza, Deputy General of Gipuzkoa; Eneko Goia, Mayor of Donostia; Juan Ignacio Pérez, Regional Minister of Science, Universities and Innovation; Laura Poderoso, Deputy Director of the BBVA Foundation; and Itziar Alkorta, Academic Director of the Summer Courses.

The inaugural lecture, entitled “Quantum physics: From the toaster to the computer”, was given by Dr. Gonzalo Muga, former director of the EHU Quantum Centre. Muga highlighted the importance of quantum physics in technological development, mentioning applications such as the transistor, microelectronics and lasers, and underlined the current challenges and advances in the field.
